1 1 It1 C1 UI () 1, I (, R I tiUlJItCI S ] NC. <br /> 'lav I I Hq�c Itit 0 HOL I I 1\kl) ti[ I I I H <br /> 41 11 ORNI9 444111 <br />' 3 Apr 1989 <br /> Julian Munoz <br /> Safeway Stores, Inc <br /> Meat Packing Department <br /> 1111 Navy Drive <br />' Stockton, CA 95204 <br /> Re Tank Excavation <br /> and Former Sampling <br /> Safeway Meat Packing Facility <br /> Stockton, California <br />' Dear Mr Munoz <br /> This letter summarizes the results of the past subsurface investigations <br /> conducted in association with the removal of 4 underground fuel storage tanks <br /> located at the Safeway Meat Packing facility, 1111 Navy Drive, Stockton, <br /> California (Figures 1 and 2) The tanks were removed by Precision industries <br /> (PI ) of Stockton, California, between 6 and 10 July 1987 Weiss Associates <br /> (WA) of Oakland, California, conducted several phases of subsurface <br /> investigation and soil stockpile sampling between April 1987 and September <br /> 1988 The results of soil and groundwater sampling are presented in Tables <br /> 1 through 4 and sampling locations are presented in Figures 2 through 7 <br /> The following briefly describes the work performed WA report dates and <br /> recipients are underlined <br /> 10 June 1987 - Julian Munoz, Safety+ <br />' On 7 and 8 April 1987, WA supervised the drilling of soil borings and <br /> collected soil samples around the underground storage tanks The location <br /> of borings B-1 through B-9 are indicated in Figure 2 In the area of the <br />' tanks the site is underlain by low permeability silts and clays with <br /> discontinuous layers of clayey sand Groundwater was encountered at about <br /> 16 to 17 5 ft below grade Photoionization detector (PID) readings during <br /> drilling indicated that volatile hydrocarbons were present in soil in all <br /> borings except B-1 and B-9 The highes'L concentration of volatile <br /> hydrocarbons was detected at 700 ppmv in the sample collected at 19 7 ft <br /> from the bottom of boring S-8 One sample from each boring except B-9 was <br />' analyzed by Brown and Caldwell Laboratories (B&C) of Emeryville, <br /> California, for total fuel hydrocarbons (TFH) and benzene, toluene and <br /> xylene (BTX) Analytic results are presented in Table 1 TFH at 1100 <br />' ppm were only detected in the sample collected from boring B-2 at 20 7 ft <br /> below grade BTX were not detected in any samples <br /> u ust 1987 - Safeway <br /> Between 6 and 10 June 1987, the four underground fuel storage tanks were <br /> removed by PI WA personnel were present to observe the removal Water <br />
