SAFEWAY MEAT PACKING FACILITY, STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA <br /> TIER II RISK BASED CORRECTIVE ACTION <br /> FEBRUARY 26, 1996 <br /> PAGE 2 - 1 <br /> 2.0 CHEMICALS OF INTEREST AND TOXICITY CRITERION <br /> This section reviews the analytical chemistry results that have been used to identify the chemicals <br /> of interest for which SSTLs have been developed In addition, this section provides information <br /> on the composition of diesel and discusses total petroleum hydrocarbon as diesel (TPH-D) results <br /> for the site soil and groundwater samples <br /> 2.1 Chemicals of Interest and Toxicity Factors <br /> Tables 1 and 2 summarize the analytical results for soil and groundwater, respectively The soil <br /> samples results reported in Table 1 are for the samples that were taken either after the tank field <br /> excavation or are within a portion of the site that was not excavated or was unlikely to have been <br /> excavated The groundwater samples results are from the latest monitoring period and for <br /> hydropunch/grab samples recently taken by Krazen (1995) Each chemical detected in at least <br /> one sample has been identified as a chemical of interest (COI) These chemicals are benzene, <br /> toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene, 1,2,4-trnmethylbenzene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and pyrene <br /> Among the COIs, only benzene is classified as a carcinogen USEPA categorizes benzene as a <br /> known human or "Class A" carcinogen Under current theory of carcmogenesns, any exposure <br /> to a carcinogen increases the lifetime risk of developing a cancer The cancer slope factor (SF) <br /> is a used to characterize the potency of a carcinogen as a result of inhalation and oral exposures <br /> The slope factor is in units of "risk per mg of chemical per kilogram body weight per day" <br /> [(mg/kg-day)'`] The incremental increase in cancer rate is estimated by the SF times the <br /> estimated lifetime average daily dose of a chemical (un units of mg/kg-day) Both the USEPA <br /> (1995b) and the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 1994) <br /> 0131CDJ1 <br />
