Highway 12 in Lodi , California. The investigation was
conducted to provide basic subsurface soil and hydrogeologic information
at the site and included soil sampling at five-foot intervals. Soil
profile information will be of assist nce in the interpretation of
possible contaminant migration. Before work began, well ' installation
permits were obtained from the San Joaquin local health district.
On-site work commenced at 2:10 p.m. , February 28, 1985, and was con-
tinued the next day until 2:30 p.m. , at hick time three borings within
the property boundary had been drilled, its- shown in Figure 1. A fourth
borehole was not drilled due to the presence of a septic tank within 50
feet of the projected well location. The soil borings were drilled with
a truck-mounted 8-inch hollow-stem auger to a depth of 20 feet (MW-2,
MW-3) , and in one case, 45.5 feet (MW-1) . The soils were sampled at
five-foot intervals and then classified and recorded according to the
Unified Soils Classification System (Plate 1) . All four borings were
Completed as monitoring wells of the type shown on the individual bore
logs, Plates 2-5.
Ground water was encountered at the 29-foot level in MW-1, at which
point a 12 percent LEL hydrocarbon level was recorded, accompanied by a
petroleum odor.
