BACKGROUND TO BIORLMlED1ATI0R
It is proposed that in situ bioremediation (ISO) be used at the
Kayo Lodi site to clean not only the groundwater but the residual
soil adsorbed hydrocarbons. The details of the proposed Mork
f Plan follow.
The Groundwater Contamination Assessment Report described the
areal and vertical extent of pollution in the aquifers. There
appears to be little petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in the
vadose zone, but contamination is found at the interface of this
region with the saturated zone and in the groundwater. The
1
currently operating remediation system ai '~strips the
contaminants from recovered groundwa%)e''r air stripper has
been in operation since October, IQr nd s `nce then to 1 June
1987 . approximately 10,O0O0OOO \ f groundwater have been
treated with the resultant co ry. of over 650 gallons of
[ ga . The air strip g , Overy rate has been decreasing as
oline
the concentration f th g saline in the subsurface has
decreased. This im that a very long-term air stripping
operation. will be required to achieve the required `levei of.
h remediation. Dccasionally,. at monitoring wells 10 and 13 free ... i
` product can still be found. Additional remediation efforts,
s _
therefore, should be considered.
Knowledge about the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons has
been expanding in recent years. This is exemplified by the
recent book Petroleum ticro5iolo (1). A: list of the genera
" typical of hydrocarbonoclastic soil microorganisms .is found in
F-
r l Table 1 showing the wide diversity of both bacteria and fungi
involved in-this-decomposit1on-. These-organisms--are_ubiqui_tou_s
and several of the genera are likely to be present in the
subsurface soils at Lodi . It is also noteworthy that all of the
na-Nri. .a'
1. .x..
