The Q2-2002 Report included a
summary of findings from drilling three soil borings,converting the borings to water table monitoring wells, and
completing the second quarter groundwater monitoring and sampling event.
The three soil borings were completed in early June,and the results of soil sampling showed gasoline and BTEX
constituents at approximately 15 to 30 feet. First water was encountered at approximately 30 feet,and the depth
to water following well development was approximately 26 feet. The calculated groundwater flow direction was
reportedly to the southeast. The wells were purged and sampled on 13 June 2002, and the following constituents
were identified in groundwater:
• TPH-gasoline at<50 to 2000 micrograms per liter(µg/1);
• Benzene at 1.1 to 92 µg/1;
• MtBE at<0.5 to 2.6 µg/1; and
• 1,2-dichloroethane at 1.2 to 40 µg/l.
Upgradient also completed a cursory well receptor survey, and stated that approximately 100 residences with
wells are located within 2,000 feet of the site. Documentation of well locations and well construction
information was not provided. The nearest water supply well is an abandoned domestic well at the subject site.
Reportedly,this well has been out of use since J&L Market connected to city supplied water more than two
years ago. In our 23 January 2002 letter,Board staff requested J&L Market to purge and sample the on-site
domestic well, and submit results in the second quarter monitoring report. Upgradient stated in the Q2-2002
Report that an attempt to sample the on-site domestic well was made;however,the pump could not be removed
without special equipment,and the task was deferred.
Upgradient concluded that the extent of soil and groundwater contamination has not been defined,and
recommends drilling eleven additional soil borings to define the extent of contamination. Five of the borings
will be converted into monitoring wells completed in the water table aquifer. Upgradient also recommends
destroying the on-site domestic well in accordance with San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
(County)regulations.
California Environmental Protection Agency
VoRecycled Paper
The energy challenge facing California is real. Every Californian needs to take immediate action to reduce energy consumption.
For a list of simple ways you can reduce demand and cut your energy costs,see our web-site at http://w .swmb.ca.gov/mgcb5
