Jim Fisk Page 2
PHS/EHD has completed review of the Site Remediation Report prepared by Upgradient Environmental
Consultants dated December 15, 1995. The report contains analytical information (soil results)
obtained in November 1995 during overexcavation of contaminated soil from the former
dispenser/piping location. The soil removal reduced the gasoline mass volume significantly with little
need of further remedial measures in the soil vadose zone.
An active on site product well currently exists and is within 250 feet of gasoline contaminated soil. San
Joaquin County Department of Public Works depth to groundwater maps recorded a level of 35 feet
bgs at this site in 1993. At the time of the overexcavation, gasoline odor and PID measurements
indicated soil contamination was present in the excavation at 35 feet (bgs). Due to the verticle
extenttdepth of the gasoline contaminated soil and the depth to groundwater in 1993, PHS/EHD
requires a groundwater investigation be performed to determine if groundwater has been impacted.
Overexcavation confirmation samples JL-P-13 (24 feet bgs) and JL-P-15 (12.5 feet bgs) tested positive
for residual gasoline. The west wall of the excavation, where the samples were collected, could not be
extended during excavation because of an existing building. The lateral extent of soil contamination to
the west under the existing building was not fully defined. Further soil investigation may be warranted
in this area of sample JL-P15 (TPH-Gas 4200 ppm).
PHS/EHD requires a work plan and permit application with fees be submitted to this office for review
and approval prior to any drilling or sample collection.
If you have any further questions regarding this matter, contact Harlin Knoll, at (209) 468-3442.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Harlin Knoll, Senior REHS Margare Lagono, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Lead Senior
HK:jlmkt3
c: SWRCB - George Lockewood
c: CVRWQCB - Elizabeth Thayer
c: Upgradient Environmental Consultants
