Mr. Thomas Hendrix
Page Two
November 25, 1991
In general, the results of soil and groundwater sampling and chemical testing
from the Kleinfelder boring and monitoring well indicate the ,presence of Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons, Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene at varying
concentrations.Tests on soil samples revealed hydrocarbon detections as deep as 40 feet
in the test boring. In general, soils exhibited lower hydrocarbon concentrations with
greater depth. Benzene concentrations in groundwater range from an initial level of
0.382 mg/l (April 1986), to 0.350 mg/1 in May/June 1988, and "Not Detected" (less than
0:0005 mg/I) in-July"1991:'Toluene"was present in all"thredtests of-groundwater at–
concentrations
t—concentrations of 0.115 mg/l, 0.012 mg/l and 0.0043 mg/1, respectively.
Groundwater in the Site area is reported to flow towards the southwest according
to local water district information (Fall, 1989). Several wells exist in the Site area as
observed in a brief reconnaissance of the Munford Avenue area. Some wells were
found and plotted on the sketch map in Figure 2. No details regarding well depth,
i
construction or other data were available on the wells at this time..
RECOMMENDED WORK PLAN
This letter report and recommendations for additional work is prepared in
accordance with the County's letter request to Thomas E. Hendrix dated September 11, j
1991.
i
Because of the low concentrations of fuel-related components in the tests results,
additional groundwater sampling and analysis on a quarterly basis for one year is
recommended. At the same time, a more detailed survey of groundwater conditions in
the site area will be completed. Sampling and chemical testing of water from selected
_ . wells near=the site-will,be performed-in the-first-quarter. Currently, ,the .tank-area
monitoring well, the "house" well and the neighbors well to the west are proposed forW,
sampling and analysis (Figure 2). Groundwater information available from the local
water agency and local well owners will be collected and reviewed for possible use in
groundwater gradient and water quality determinations. f
i
Other potential sources of hydrocarbon contamination exist in the site area.
These will be examined and an evaluation of their potential as off-site sources of
groundwater contamination will be made.
Once the four quarters of sampling and analysis and the other data are gathered
and evaluated, a report of our findings will be prepared. In that report, additional site
data may be needed to accurately define the site groundwater quality conditions. 1
E
