4.0 Information from Site Reconnaissance and Interviews
The purpose of the site reconnaissance was to obtain information indicating the
likelihood of recognized environmental conditions in connection with the property. During the
site visit, Black & Veatch visually observed the property and any structure located on the
property to the extent not obstructed by adjacent buildings or other obstacles.
One site visit was made to the property by Florence Wedington of Black& Veatch on
January 19, 1999. The periphery of the property was visually observed, as well as the
periphery of all structures on the property. The property was also viewed from all adjacent
public thoroughfares. There were no general limitations during the site reconnaissance.
4.1 Hazardous Substances in Connection with Identified Uses
During the site visit, there was no evidence that indicates treatment, storage, disposal
of, or generation of hazardous substances on the properties as a result of present operations.
Because the site is paved, it is not possible to determine visually if hazardous substances are
present as a result of past operations on the site. A print shop and a fertilizer company existed
on the northwest portion of the site and a gasoline station on the northeast portion. Properties
having similar past uses have been known to have site soils and/or groundwater with hazardous
materials.
Gasoline stations typically use and store hazardous materials including fuels, oils,
greases, and solvents. Print shops typically use and store inks, dyes, and solvents. Fertilizer
companies typically use and store pesticides and other chemicals.
4.2 Hazardous Substance Containers and Unidentified
Substance Containers
During the site visit, there were no hazardous substance containers or unidentified
substance containers on the site.
4.3 Storage Tanks (including contents and assessment of
leakage or potential for leakage)
No evidence of USTs was found on the site at the time of the site reconnaissance. No
registrations for USTs were found on a search of regulatory databases. Due to their nature, a
complete inspection of a site for USTs without an intrusive investigation is not possible.
However, no visual evidence of USTs such as fill ports or vent pipes, was noted at the time of
the site inspection. Historic evidence shows that there was a gas station on the northeast
B&V Project 62041.100 4-1
NA6204 I Thase-Ldoc(1/27/99)
