The sample is
to be identified as glycerin according to COC U8E1911.
On May 23, 2008, a diluted sample, (340mg/ 50ml of McOH) followed by a 40x dilution was
analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry under the conditions of EPA Method 8270C
Semivolatile Organic Compounds by GC/MS. This method is designed to look for part-per-billion levels
of organic compounds having boiling points between 150° - 300°C. The GC/MS software utilizes the
National Bureau of Standards 75K library that contains the reference spectra of 75,000 common natural
and synthetic organic compounds.
On May 27, 2008 the sample data was reviewed using the National Bureau of Standards 75K library.
The chromatogram showed five major peaks include glycerin. The major peaks are as follows in order
of retention time:
1) Glycerin
2) Dodecoecanoic acid, methyl ester
3) Tetradecanoic acid, methyl ester
4) 9-Hexadecenoic acid, methyl ester
5) Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester
In summary based on the data, the unknown brown liquid/solid mixture contains glycerin and fatty
acids. Fatty acids are aliphatic carboxylic acid with varying hydrocarbon lengths with a terminal
carboxyl (-COOH) group. The general formula is R- (CH2)n - COOK This was strictly a qualitative
analysis.
Mario D'Onofrio f Donna Keller
Chemist Laboratory Director
Certification 4 2595
