,
APPENDIX A
Standard operating Procedures i
i
This appendix outlines the standard operating procedures
performed by Twining associated with drilling and soil sampling.
In addition, decontamination procedures, and sample handling and
chain-of-custody procedures are presented. Finally, the analytical
methods and quality assurance andlquality control procedures are
summarized, ,
`(
A-1 Drilling and Soil SamolinQ Procedures: Each soil, boring
is dri, lled. using a Central Mine Equipment Company (CME) 75' truck
mounted drill rig equipped with 6#5/8-inch outside diameter (ob) t
continuous-flight hollow-stem augers. Soil samples are collected
by driving a California split-barrel ring sampler,equipped with !
three 1. 5-inch OD by six-inch-longi brass sleeves. a minimum of 12
inches into the soil. The bottom `sleeve is retainedd for chemical
analyses. once the soil sample is brought to the surface, the ends
:of the brass sleeve retained for chemical analyses are wrapped with
Aluminum foil or teflon' tape, and fitted with plastic caps-. Soil
retained in the two uppermost brass sleeves is transferred into Wit. '
plastic bag and field tested E'for organic vapors using
a ;
photoi.vnization detector (PID) . The soil within the plastic bag is:
agitated prior to testing to enhance petroleum hydrocarbon
volatilization.
All soil borings are drilled under the direction of Twinings
project geologist. Subsequent tofeld vapor testing, each soil
sample is examined for geological characteristics,. Data ccrllect+d f
from this physical inspection are used to prepare continuous logs `
of borings. Y
sails are Classified in the Iield according to the Unified
Soil Classification System (USCS) The USCS classifies soil types
based on consistency, moisture, plasticity, grain size, and ether
distinguishing' :features.
80il cuttings. gerr .rated from. the drilling operations are
transferred into 55gall..on steel barrels. Each barrel is -labeled
as to its contents The barrels are sttackpiled on-site at a
location inaccessible to the public.
