Box 1025
West Sacramento, CA 95691
EARTHWORK OBSERVATION AND TESTING
DITCH BACKFILLING
BEACON STATION - LODI
State Highway 12 and Lower Sacramento Road
Lodi, California
Job No. 423-010
In accordance with your authorization, we have observed earthwork operations and performed
field density testing during the backfilling of a ditch area located on the southeast corner of
the subject site. it is our understanding that this area would be utilized to support a new
station/store building to be constructed during remodeling of the site. Our observations and
testing were performed between October 10 and 13, 1994. This letter presents the results
of our testing and observations.
The work observed and tested by our firm consisted of the backfilling of an abandoned ditch
area approximately four feet in depth. Site clearing consisted of the removal of existing
brush, asphalt and concrete ditch linings, and other unsuitable ;materials from the areas being
graded. Following clearing and stripping operations, the exposed materials within the ditch
bottom were scarified, moisture conditioned, and compacted. Subsequently, the ditch area
was filled to the approximate level of the adjacent pavement section with imported fill
material. The fills were keyed into the ditch side slopes as the fiil was brought up. Fill
materials were mixed, moisture conditioned and compacted in lifts. Cur representative
performed field density testing during fill placement and compaction.
Field density tests were performed in accordance with ASTM Test Designations D2922 and
D3017 (Nuclear Probe Method). We also performed a laboratory Modified Proctor test on a
representative sample of the material used during earthwork construction, in accordance with
ASTM Test Designation D1557, Method A. The on-site fill soil consisted of light brown sand
(SP) having a maximum dry density of 126 pounds per cubic foot at an optimum moisture
content of 8 percent.
Our test data indicate that at least 90 percent relative compaction was achieved in the areas
tested, based on the laboratory determined maximum dry density (ASTM D1557). It is our
opinion that fill placement and compaction was performed in accordance with sound
engineering practice and our recommendations.
3140 BEACON BLVD.•WEST SACRAMENTO, CA 95691•TELEPHONE 916/371-0434•FAX 916/371-1809
