Mr. Mike Whelan
ARCO Products Company
February 14, 1997
Page 2
January 26, 1997
Dissolved phase gasoline, BTEX, MTBE and VOCs were not reported above laboratory
MDU in the groundwater samples collected from the three monitoring wells purged and
sampled during this monitoring episode.
A summary of the analytical results obtained is presented in Table 1. For comparison
purposes, the results of previous analyses are presented with the current results.
The laboratory method blanks contained nondetect concentrations of gasoline,BTEX,MTBE
and VOCs. Review of laboratory QA/QC data did not identify laboratory methodology
errors that would have affected analyses performed.
Data-Appendices
Field protocol followed by SECOR staff during purging and sampling operations is included
as Appendix A. The Chain-of-Custody Records for the water samples collected and analyzed
are included as Appendix B. The laboratory data sheets are included as Appendix C.
SECOR water sample field data sheets are included as Appendix D.
Summary
Analytical data obtained from the two monitoring episodes appears to show that groundwater
beneath the facility has not been impacted by petroleum fuel hydrocarbons or volatile organic
compounds. This is evidenced by two sampling episodes exhibiting nondetect concentrations
of VFHs, BTEX, MTBE and VOCs.
When the three wells were installed in November 1996, trace concentrations of petroleum
fuel hydrocarbons in the C16-C40 range were identified in groundwater at the location of
MW-1. Trace concentrations of gasoline and BTEX were also identified in groundwater at
the location of monitoring well MW-2. Chemical analysis of the groundwater sample
collected initially in November 1996 from MW-2 following EPA Test Method 8260,however,
failed to indicate the presence of ethylbenzene above laboratory MDL.s of 2.0 micrograms
per liter (µg/L). This compound was reported at a concentration of 15 µg/L by the
laboratory using EPA Test Method 8020. Benzene and total xylenes, reported at 1.6µg/L
and 1.3µg/L by the laboratory using Test Method 8020, were below the laboratory MDL of
2.0 Ag/L for these compounds using Test Method 8260.
IN 40007-097-01
LHG:WP:97-071eb\a-maeteagwm
