15 July 1999
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0504
4.0. SOIL EXCAVATION PROCEDURES
On 10 November 1998,and shortly thereafter, approximately 316 tons of hydrocarbon-impacted soil
were excavated from the west edge of the site at the location of the former UST system. Soil was
excavated using a backhoe with an approximate 15-foot reach capability. Soil was stockpiled on the
eastern edge of the site. The open excavation area was surrounded by temporary fencing and
barricades.
Excavated soil was field-screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an OVM.
Approximately 250 yards of soil was loaded and transported to Forward Inc. Landfill under manifest
for proper disposal on 10 November 1999. An additional 100 yards of impacted soil were
transported to Forward Inc. Landfill for disposal on 14 December 1999. Manifests for the transported
soil are included in Appendix A.
Following the State of California Regional Water Quality Board, Tri-Regional Board
recommendations, soil samples were collected from the base and each side wall of the excavation
at a minimum interval of every 20 linear feet. Soil samples were collected from the base of the
excavation at a minimum of one sample for every 400 square feet of excavation area.
Soil samples collected from the floor and sidewalls of the excavation were obtained using a backhoe.
Soil samples were collected from the bucket of the excavating equipment by using a metric soil
hammer and a new, clean, 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeve. The ends of the sample sleeves were
covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
After collecting and sealing each soil sample, the sample sleeve was labeled with the sample
location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples were then
placed in a chilled container under ice and transported under chain-of-custody to Precision Enviro-
Tech (PET) of Stockton, a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified
laboratory.
The samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline by EPA Method 8015 Modified,
• Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8260 and
• Fuel oxygenates including methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE), tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA), di-
isopropyl ether (DIPS), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary-amyl methyl ether
(TAME) by EPA Method 8260 Modified.
Advanced GeoEm ironmcntal,Inc.
