15 December 2000
AGE-N(' Project No. ()8-0504
Pa,-,c ' oi'7
1998. Motu- samples were collected beneath the USTS. one sample was collected beneath the
dispenser area and three laboratory-compositcd soil sampfes were collected from the excavated soil.
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBF) and tertiary hutanol (TBA) were: detected in soil samples
collected from heneath the 1 ISTs and dispenser island at concentrations up to 39 pants per million,
total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as .gasoline CFPJ I-g) ,v erc detected at concentrations up to
1.400 ppm: and volatile aromatics (benzene. toluene, ethyl henzene and xylenes: BTEX) were
detected at concentrations up to 190 ppnl.
Approximately '00 tons ol'soil were excavated during removal ofthe LIS'T'S. ",\11cr removal of'the
t_'S"fs completed_ the soil was placed back into the excavation because of strong hydrocarbon
odors and the proximity to a school. TxNo lahoratory-composited samples were collected from the
stockpiled soil prior to placement into the excavation. TPI I-o, 11 EX and MTBF and TBA v ere all
detected in the composite samples.
14. SOIL. EXCAVATION PROCL L)URFS
On 10 November 1998. approximately 250 yards oi'lhydrocarbon-impacted soil were excavated Irom
the location of the fOrIlle'r UST system. Soil was excavated using a backhoe with an approximate 15-
600t reach capability. Fxcavatcd soil was field-screened for the presence of volatile organic
compounds using an OVM. Sol] was stockpiles( on the eastern eclue ofthe site. Approximately 1 ?f1
yards ol'soil was loaded and transported to Forward Inc. Landfill under manifest Cor proper disposal
on 10 November 1999. An additional 100 yards of impacted soil were transported to Forward Inc.
Landfill for disposal on 14 Ucccmher 1999.
The open excavation area ,gas surrounded by tcinporary fencing and barricades.
Soil samples collected from the floor and sidewalls ofthe excavation were obtained usin« a backhoe.
A total of nine soil samples were collected trom the floor and sidewalls of the over-excavation.
'I PH— \\as detected at concentrations ftp to 80 milli-ram per kilogram Ong/k) in the sample from
the north %wall. east end ofthe excavation. TPI 1-g was not detect in soil samples collected from that
south. not thwest. and east wal l of the over excaation. Additionally. TPH- was not detected in the
samples collected from the south end ofthe west wall and from the floor ot'the excavatiOtt.
BTLX compounds were detected at concentrations up to 1.0 mg/kg, benzene was only detected in
the north west wall sample. MTBF and 173A were detected at concentrations tip to 1 .; mg/kg and
8.9 m`ik`, respectively. M FBE was detected at the highest concentrations in the northern portiorr
ofthe over excavation. especially in the northern west wall sample. located at the nortliN est edge of
the site under Monroe Avenue. Analytical results of soil samples are summarized in Tables I and ?.
lel vrared GcoF11%irmlITICIIIAL 111C.
