21 if required by the SJEHD after Site redevelopment is completed. The SIC EHD approved
the work plans and/or permits (SJCEHD2004b, c, d, e) and their approvals are attached
in Appendix A.
In a March 2004 letter, the DTSC requested that the monitoring wells at Area 101 be sampled
1
i prior to well destruction. Theses wells were sampled and the wells were destroyed. The DTSC
i
3 letter and the sampling results are included in Appendix C.
5.0 REMEDIATION ACTIVITIES
During March and April 2004, Evans Brothers completed the RAP excavations and stockpiled
approximately 2,677 cubic yards (cy) of soil at the Site. Confirmation samples were collected
from the base and sidewalls of each excavation in accordance with the RDIP procedures. If a
confirmation sample exceeded the RAOs, excavation continued until all RAOs were met. Soil
i
from the RAP excavations was stockpiled separately according to the COCs. All stockpiles were
placed on and covered with plastic. Treadwell'&Rollo representatives were on-site to observe
i the excavation work and collect soil confirmation and waste characterization samples. Where
confirmation samples exceeded an RAO concentration, excavation continued until all
confirmation samples were below the RAOs. The RAP excavation and confirmation sampling
activities are discussed below.
i
5.1 RAP Excavation and Confirmation Sampling Procedures
1
i The proposed dimensions of the RAP excavations were presented in the RDIP. Thirty-seven
soil hot spots and RAP excavations were present in Areas 10, 11, 15, 20,and 21 (Figures 3
through 6). Prior to any excavation activities, Underground Service Alert(USA)was contacted
in accordance with USA requirements. At.each RAP excavation, soil was excavated 3 feet
laterally and one foot deeper than the hot spot sampling location. The remedial contractor used
backhoes and tracked excavators to remove the soil.
1 25971025.DGD 10 11 August 2005
i
