IN-SITU AIR SPARGING PILOT TEST
' 41 PROCEDURES
4 1,1 SYSTEM INSTALLATION AND SETUP
From 02 February to 07 February 1996, an in-sau air sparging (IAS) pilot test was performed at the
r site This pilot test was performed to provide data for the feasibility of air sparging as a remediation
' method at the site Two sparging wells were installed at the site on 25 January 199C(Section 3 0)
PVC piping was installed from a temporary'air compressor to the two wells On 02 February 1996,
compressed air was supplied to the two IAS wells at a pressure of approximately 15 pounds per
square inch(psi) The pressure was increased from 05 February to 07 February to approximately 20
sparging Approximately 5 to 7 psi was required to overcome the water column in the spargg wells t
,
' For the IAS pilot test, wells MW-1, MVV-2,MW-4, MW-5 and MW-18 were utilized for observation
points ,Each well was fitted with air-tight well caps, valves and tubing for monitoring
pressure/vacuum and organic vapors in each well
r
' 4 1 2 COLLECTION OF BASELINE GROUND WATER SAMPLES
,On 30 January 1996, ground water samples were collected from monitoring wells MW-1, MW-4 and
' MW-5, following the procedures outlined in Section 5 0 Samples were transported under chain-of-
custody to MAI and analyzed for TPH-g and BTE&X in accordance with EPA methods 5030 and
602 and to Alpha Analytical Laboratories (AAL) in Ukiah, California and analyzed for dissolved iron
in accordance with EPA method 236 1 Samples were collected to piovide baseline concentrations
immediately before the IAS test
' Upon completion of the IAS test, ground water samples were collected from each well at the site as
a part of the standard quarterly ground water monitoring (see Section 5 0 ) '
4 1'3 FIELD MEASUREMENTS AND DATA COLLECTION
Induced pressure, organic vapors, ground water depth and dissolved oxygen were measured at MW-
' 1, MW-2, MW-4 and MW-5 throughout the test Measurements were also collected at M-XV-18
during the startup and middle of the test Induced pressure was measured at each well using
' Magnelielic differential pressure gauges, organic vapor`s were measured at each well head using a
r photo-ionization detector(PID), ground water depth was measured using a Sohnst water'level meter,
and dissolved oxygen was then measured using a YS1 Model 55 dissolved oxygen meter Afler
collection of measurements, the air-tight well cap was replaced at the end of each monitoring pet iod
I
