1
Ms. Kristin Shelton
' PROGRESS & EFFECTIVENESS OF REMEDIATION
Effectiveness of Remediation
During the year 2015 a measurable thickness of free floating hydrocarbon product was present in
well MW6R during the third quarter and a measurable thickness of free floating hydrocarbon
' product was present in well MW9R during the first, second, third and fourth quarters. The
hydrocarbon recovery skimmer did not operate in MW8 during 2015; it was previously removed
pending an increase in product thickness. Approximately 0.5 gallons of free product/water
mixture was bailed from MW6R during the year 2015 and approximately 131 gallons have been
bailed since October 2007. No free product/water mixture was present or removed from well
' MW8 during 2015. Approximately 946 gallons have been bailed from MW8 since 1994.
Approximately 8.0 gallons of product/water mixture were removed by bailing from well MW9R
during the year 2015 and approximately 524 gallons have been bailed since October 2003. Well
' VEW 1-D was utilized for soil vapor extraction during the year 2015 and was not monitored for
free product. Approximately 125 gallons have been bailed from VEWl-D since June 2010.
Ground Zero will continue to monitor and manually recover free hydrocarbon product as
' appropriate.
The SVE system was installed and put into operation during the third quarter of 2012 and the
' system ran intermittently during the fourth quarter of 2012. During 2013 the SVE system was
down for repairs during the majority of the first two quarters of the year. The heating elements
were replaced and the system was restarted in early May 2013 and ran for the remainder of 2013,
' only occasionally going down for minor repairs. The system was down when monitored in early
January 2014. The system remained non-operational from January 3 to December 12, 2014,
when a new heating element was fabricated and installed and the system was restarted. The
' system ran without incident through 2015, with the only alteration being the system was
modified in early-April 2015 to extract only from extraction well VEWI-D, as a targeted effort
to eliminate the presence of free floating hydrocarbon product from the site. During the year
' 2015 the SVE system operated for approximately 8,750 hours, extracting hydrocarbon vapor
from extraction wells VEWl-SND from January to early-April and only from VEW1-D from
early-April through December 2015, at an average rate of 85 cubic feet per minute (cfm).
' Influent vapor samples collected from the SVE system in January and March 2015 indicated the
presence of low to moderate concentrations of TPHg, BTEX compounds and MTBE in the
extracted vapor stream. After the system was modified to extract only from well VEWI-D
influent vapor samples collected from the SVE system in April, May, June, July, August,
September, October, November and December 2015 indicated the presence moderate to high
concentrations of TPHg, BTEX compounds and MTBE in the extracted vapor stream. To date,
' the SVE system has operated for approximately 16,560 hours and has removed approximately
15,770 pounds of hydrocarbons from the subsurface. The current hydrocarbon removal rate is
approximately 16 pounds per day.
1
0:\Dam\GROUNDZE\WOOLSEY.ROB\Repom\QMR\2015 QMRAANNUAL REPOR71Fnal Teztjw.doc
