Garber
RE: Geotechnical Recommendations for Excavation
880 Victor Rd., Lodi, California
Dear Mr. Garber:
In response to your request we have made a geotechnical review of the data
for the above project to predict the stability of the soils during excavation. We
understand that an excavation will be made to a maximum depth of 15' at the
location on your site map where borings 7 through 14 are shown. The excavation
will have near vertical sides.
We have reviewed the logs and soil samples submitted to us by Aegis for
borings 7 through 14. They show a very stiff to hard, moist to dry clayey and sandy
silt. This extends to approximately 12 feet deep on the northern edge of the
proposed excavation and to 8 feet on the southern. Underlying this and extending
to the maximum depth explored is a dry, dense silty sand. There was no free water
encountered.
Based on our review we predict that the upper silt material will be stable and
require little or no bracing or shoring to support temporary excavations. The silty
sand underlying this may require shoring especially where the clay and silt content is
low. Prior to final design of any excavation deeper than 8 to 12 feet, additional
geotechnical testing and evaluation should be performed to quantify the excavation
stability and to design the shoring system, if needed.
