'• 40 EVALUATION OF GROUND WATER REMEDIATION Draft
TECHNOL O GIES
Based on the conclusions presented in the previous section, ERM
evaluated ground water remediation technologies to determine the Best
' Available Technology (BAT) for further reducing the concentrations of
TPH-g and BTEX compounds in ground water immediately downgradient
of each former UST location
4.1 GROUND WATER REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES
ERM evaluated several potentially applicabie ground water remediation
technologies, including
• Ground water air sparging,
' . Fenton's oxidation,
o Ground water extraction and treatment, and
G Enhanced bioremediation (via injection of oxygen releasing compound
[ORQ
i
' Each technology was evaluated based on the technology's applicability to
the site conditions (hydrogeologic conditions and chemical types), the
estimated duration required to achieve a reduction in chemical
' concentrations, and estimated costs (capital and long-term)
' In evaluating the various ground water remediation technologies, the
primary limiting factor is the low permeability of the site soils The low
permeability of the soils would severely limit the influence of air sparging
' wells, the influence of Fenton's oxidation, the drawdown of extraction
wells, and the distribution of ORC The following subsections present the
' rationale for elimination of three of the technologies and presents the best
available remedial technology for the site
4.1.1 Air Sparg-ing
Air sparging was not selected as the remedial technology because, based
' on the shallow ground water and low permeability of soils, effective
distribution and collection of sparging vapors would be extremely
difficult to achieve Also, the installation of an air sparging system would
cause disruption to existing site conditions since an air sparging system
' 12
