..' AUG 1E '89 12:13 BIO NATIr'"'=L CORP.
(C) 1989 BIO NATIONAL C:ORP'ORATION
5- "PLY FOR VARIANCE TO TREAT HYDROCARBON SOIL CONTAMINATION IN
SITU I
a. Assiming acceptance of on site cutti Igs/water treatment, knowing
the underlying water table ,is already contaminated with both
petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbon products, simultaneous in
situ soil treatment is the most desiratle approach to mitigation of
the site.
b. CONTROLLED GROUNDWATER EXTRACTION, COUPLED WITH BIO-AUG-
KENTED VAPOR EXTRACTION OF THE SOILS, WILL ASSURE CONTROL
OF FLUIDS AND VAPORS IN THE I SOIL AND GROUNDWATER
SIMULTANEOUSLY, AS ALL M0V:5'v1R1-NT WILL BE TOWARD THB
EXTRACTION WELLS.
Bio-augme,ritation of the vapor extraction process allows in situ
treatment of both volatile and non-volatile hydrocarbons by oxidative
microbes. The aystem has full conti-61 over remedial fluids by
excess fluid extraction from insertion/venting° and extraction wells.
d. Soil contamination should be mitigated along with groundwater
treatment, to prevent further contamination of the groundwater as
seasonal variations in Nater table occur.,
8. Potential air' pollution will be controlled b v conventional methods,
finishing with a carbon filter.
It is hoped that this outline and the accompanying Work Plan will receive a
"go-ahead" from DOHS, RWQCB and Sen Joaquin County. We believe it i
represents a practical and thoughtful approach toy a fairly well contained, but
complex Problem.
' y at,tacRing the groundwater problem immediately, we hope to avoid any
negative effects of a wet winter, including ;'e, ersal of the groundwater
gradient.
While we expect to make adjustments as the process develops, we are
c"=rifident by retaining full, control over both the groundwater and vadose zone
activity, the whole can take place: in a'M reasonably short time with
excellent results
erald V.
