BIO NATIONAL CORPORATIOI i
Bakersfield, California
GENERAL PARAMETERS FOR BIOREMEDIATION
r
The development of bioremediation technology includes understanding the range of
application and the physical parameters the microbiologist looks for. The physical
environment should meet the following criteria If adjustments can bring the
environment into line economically, then bioremediation is usually the method of '
choice.
TREATMENT PARAMETERS
'i
OXYGEN LEVELS - Oxygen pathways are important to initiate hydrocarbon
biodegradation. Aeration, in a reasonably friable soil, can extend naturally a,
as much as three feet. Waterlogging or compaction can reduce the total
amount of air filled pore space.
Aeration is commonly maintained by blower or tilling.
i
I
COMPACTION - Highly compacted clayey soils are', difficult to bioremediate because
of the inability to produce a free flow of 'oxygen. Sandy or gravelly soils
are ideal for the influx of air and inoculum.'
It is possible to mix the material with more I'friable agents.
MOISTURE - Soil moisture levels in the 20 'to 80% range are suitable for
biodegradation.
Soil moisture adjustments are routine in bioremediation processes.
NUTRIENTS - High concentrations of . hydrocarbons in soil, often create a
nutritional imbalance for the microbes assigned to the bioremediation job.
Nitrogen and phosphorus bearing materials may be applied to restore
nutritional balance to the system to be bioremediated.
TEMPERATURE - Bioremediation is practical from 10 to 550 C. (50 to 1320 F.)
Temperatures- below-the=-norm -slow- the process,-and--above--may-destroy -the
microbes. (See Material Safety Data Sheet)
Temperature adjustments can be made: in a controlled remediation
environment.
j:
PH RANGE - Biodegradation is operable in the 5.S to 8.5 pH range, with the ideal
range at 7.0 - 7.5.
pH adjustments are routine in bioremediation processes.
NOTE: As a normal part of the Bio National treatment program, we incorporate
mineral and nutritional supplementation to increase the microbial degradation 1
of the contaminated material. These vary :.according to the results of our
bio-analysis of representative materials.
y
(1) PARAMTRS
l
