SECTION VI . HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION TLV 10 ppm or 30 mg/r3 (skin)
Excessive Inhalation or prolonged skin exposure maycauseheadache, weariness loss of
appetite and lassitude with incipient blood effects including Ancreased cell counts,
mild lymphotosis and eosinopenia, The mrst sign{ficant toxic effect of benzene is in-
sidious and otter. irreversible injury to the blood forming tissue from chronic low
i. level exposures. Development of leukemia may occur from chronic excessive exposure!
i Eye contact yields irritation from- liquid or high vapor concentrations. Skin contact
will also yield a defatting effect. Inhalation may result in collapse, bronchitis and
pneumonia.
FIRST AID:
-`fie cntact: dash eyes well with water for 15 minutes. Contact physician.
Skin contact: Wash skin well with water. Contaminated clothing should be ramoaed at
once.
E Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. Renore breathing if required and administer
viryg¢n r labored breathing. Contact physician.
E ; IR esrion. Give edible fats or oils to svaL.ow. Do not induce vomiting (aspiration
hazard). Contact a physician immediately. _
SECTION VII. SPILL, LEAK, AND DISPOSAL PROCEDURES
t
if a significant spill occurs, notify safety personnel and evacuate the area. Remo-,e all
ignition dcurces. Provide maximum, explosion-proof ventilation. Clean-up personnel
} mint use approved self-contained breathing apparatus and other protective equipment to
avoid contact wieh benzene.
1 ? Remove free liquid. Pick up residue with an inert absorbant, such as vermiculite, and
placed in a closed metal container for disposal, using non-sparking tools. When neces-
sary, benzene may be flushed away from a critical area with water, but flush to open
I. are., only, not to sever or to strsace waters.
DISPOSAL: Incinerate waste benzene or dispose of vis a licenaci, colvnnt disposal company
Do not send (or allow run off) to the sewer!
SECTION VIII . SPECIAL PROTEC'T'ION INFORMATION
Provide general ventilation and local exhaust ventilation where benzene is used, handled,
c.r stored to meet TLV requirements. Self-contained breathing apparatus should be avail
f able for ererb?ncies and non-rr;utine situations. Approved cartridge or canister type
E. respirators can be used far benzene, concentration: up to 50 ppm for short periods. A
full facapiece is required abcve 10 ppm
To prevent skin contact, gloves, aprons, boots, etc of neoprene or ocher benzene-•resiscan
{ materials sh.3uld be used. Chemical goggles or face shields should be used if splashing
. is possible. Eyewash station shou:.d-be available wi.,tre splashing is probable.
I : SECTION IX, SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND COMMENTS
Whenever possible, less toxic solvents should be substituted for benzene. Consult health
and saf9ty services before bmzene is .sed in plant operations. Do not breathe vapor_.
Prevent contact with liquid. it is a_ suspected cancer cau4in_g agent: '
Keep away from heat, sources of IgnitiDn, and oxidizing dents. No smoking-'in areas or-
use.
fuse. Store and handle as OS`.i' Class IB liquid.
Pre-placement detailed medical examination is needed. Workers +oho show heart, 1ting,
kidney, liver. nervous disease, or any blood abnormality s'-.auld not be assigned. Peri-
