0 •
08 November 2004
AGE-NC Project No. 04-1215
After soil sample preservation, soil was extruded from the remaining sleeves and field-screened
utilizing an organic vapor analyzer(OVA)equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo
Environmental 580B, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene). The soil was also described visually in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System.
GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
A ground water sample was collected from soil boring B-I following soil sample collection.Depth
discrete ground water samples were collected using a five-foot section of prc-cleaned, one-inch
diameter 0.010-inch slotted PVC well screen attached to blank PVC extended to surface grade.Once
the 55 foot soil sample was collected, the PVC was inserted into the boring and in-situ ground water
samples were extracted using 3/8-inch diameter polyethylene tubing fitted with a check valve which
was lowered through the hollow center of the PVC piping into the screened section and manually
pumped. Ground water samples were collected into a one-liter amber glass container and into three
laboratory-supplied 40-m1 volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials without sample preservative. The
samples were labeled and stored on ice for transport to a DHS-certified laboratory for analysis.
LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SOIL AND GROUND WATER SAMPLES
The collected ground water and soil samples were transported under chain of custody to Cal Tech
Environmental Laboratories (CTEL), a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified analytical laboratory. Selected samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel(TPH-g and TPH-d)by EPA
Method 8015 Modified; and
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX) and methyl-tert-butyl-ether
(MTBE) by EPA Method 8021.
FINDINGS
In general, soil encountered at the site was dark brown or orange brown silt, clayey silt or clay. The
soil was predominantly dry, with moderate to high consistency, low plasticity and low toughness.
Static ground water was measured at 46.75 feet bsg in boring B-1, however, the first saturated
sample was recovered from 55 feet bsg. No petroleum hydrocarbon odors were detected in any of
the borings.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
