(AGE). The Report provides a compilation and professional interpretation of the
analytical results from a 24-week ozone injection pilot test conducted between October 2004 and March 2005 at
your site. The Report states groundwater Oxidation Reduction Potential and Dissolved Oxygen levels increased
at monitoring well MW-4, located within the influence of ozone injection wells OW-2 and OW-3,with a
corresponding reduction in petroleum hydrocarbons concentrations in MW-1 and MW-4 for Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons as gasoline, 1,000 µg/L to<50 µg/L, and 65 to<50 µg/L; as well as benzene, 8.1 µg/L to<0.5
µg/L, and 0.68 to<0.5 Itg/L),respectively. Conversely, the dissolved plume of the fuel scavenger 1,2-
dichloroethane(1,2-DCA) did not show a declining trend in concentrations site-wide,nor did the petroleum
hydrocarbon plume outside of the influence of OW2 and OW-3. The Report revealed no adverse effects to water
quality as a result of ozone injection. The Report recommends:
• Continued operation of ozone injections wells OW-2 and OW-3,
• Installation of four additional ozone injection wells to address the dissolved petroleum hydrocarbon
groundwater plume (enclosed Figures 2,4, and 6), and
• Reinstallation of ozone injection well OW-1, which did not function due to improper installation.
While oz6ne injection does not appear to be effective for reducing 1,2-DCA plume concentrations, the reductions
in petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations indicates that ozone injection is warranted as recommended in the
Report. Therefore, I concur to the Report recommendations stated above. Note that the Workplan for the ozone
well installations was approved by my letter of 29 December 2003,and modified by my letter of 18 November
2004. Please provide a report of the completed work by 1 September 2005.
