Mr. Kevin McKibben
Advanced Geo Environmental (North)
GLDM
June 26, 1997
Page 2
J
COMMENT
Some moderate changes were noted for physicochemical parameters this sampling round,
most notably a reduction in pH by approximately 1 .0 unit for each well. Changes were noted
for some bionutrients, as well, especially those associated with MW-9. In particular,
phosphate exhaustion, as well as near nitrate- and potassium-exhaustion has occurred within
these waters. In comparing nutrient utilization rates corresponding to these level changes for
both wells, as well as associated microbiological population dynamics, it is clear that greater
efficiency of microbial growth and contaminant metabolism has occurred within MW-9.
Although absolute microbial numbers remain relatively low, a significantly greater proportion
of contaminant degraders is observed for waters associated with MW-9. Such results may
also suggest a higher residual concentration of contaminants within this well, as generally
higher substrate concentration levels will yield more rapid microbial metabolic kinetics. A
reduced level of contaminants likely exists for MW-14 since population dynamics are not
consistent with focused and/or efficient contaminant utilization. A review of analytical data
associated with these samples should be reviewed in order to evaluate consistency with the
above interpretations. Efforts should be undertaken to replenish nutrients in MW-9 if a
residual concentration of contaminants still remain.
Should you have any questions concerning this information, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
AKK:ch
i
