VZ1 INC,
APPENDIX IV
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROTOCOL
1.0 EXPLORATORY EXCAVATION PROCEDURES
The lateral and vertical extent of soil hydrocarbon contamination at the subject property will be
determined by surface excavation procedure to attempt clean closure. The area to be excavated will be
immediately around the location of the previous underground storage tanks. The excavation plan will
provide for a pit extending vertically downward from the area of maximum surface contamination.
Equipment will be able to excavate material to a max mum depth of approximately 30 feet.
A California State Certified Engineering Geologist w 11 supervise drilling and excavating operations.
He will review and supervise the separating and stocl piling of the clean and contaminated soil, make
onsite changes in excavation geometry and record en ountered geologic and hydrocarbon
contamination conditions as observed in the field. Excavation of contaminated soil will continue until
} soil that is believed to be uncontaminated is reached both vertically and laterally along the sides and
bottom of the pit. Soil samples will be obtained aloe the walls and floor of the excavation laterally
every 50 feet, or as appropriate, and will be analyzed for specific constituents as outlined in the
workplan. The excavation process will continue unti I non-detect soil contamination levels are reached
for all walls and floors of the pit. Appropriate fencing material will be placed around the excavation
to prevent unauthorized entry. After regulatory approval the excavations will be backfilled.
08420010.001 i
