Third Quarter 1995 Status Report for ARCO Service Station No 760, Located at
225 South Cherokee Lane, Lodi,California
Dear Mr Christie:
At the request of ARCO Products Company (ARCO), EMCON is conducting an environmental
investigation at the subject site (see Figure 1) We have prepared this status report based on the
work conducted during the third quarter 1995, which included measuring depth to groundwater,
collectirig groundwater samples from the wells for subjective and laboratory analyses, and
calculating the groundwater gradient and direction of groundwater flow beneath the site
BACKGROUND
In September 1988, RESNA Industries ([RESNA] formerly Applied GeoSystems) observed
removal of an underground waste oil storage tank located to the east of the station building In June
and July 1991, RESNA observed removal of three gasoline storage tanks and associated product
piping and two additional waste oil tanks Analytical results indicated hydrocarbons were present at
the hnuts of the former underground gasoline tank and waste oil tank cavities (RESNA, June 25,
1991, Report 38048-4)
Between May 1990 and January 1994, RESNA investigated the impact of hydrocarbons to soil
beneath and just north of the site and the impact to groundwater beneath the site. A total of 22
soil borings were drilled on site and 2 soil borings were drilled off site; 3 morutonng wells, 10
vapor extraction wells, and 1 off-sate vapor extraction well were installed at the site. Boring
locations and well locations are presented on Figure 2. Residual gasoline and diesel
hydrocarbons were detected in soil beneath the site (RESNA, January 7, 1993, Report
No. 38048-7, and RESNA, June 8, 1994, Report No. 38048-11). Dissolved hydrocarbons as
gasoline were detected at relatively low concentrations in all monitoring wells. However,
dissolved hydrocarbons as diesel and oil and grease were below laboratory detection limits
A vapor extraction test was conducted on June 14, 1991; results indicated that vapor
extraction is a feasible method of remediating soil at the site An effective radius of influence of
22 feet was estimated for the site(RESNA, April 7, 1992, Report No 38048-5)
In June 1995, EMCON observed the installation of two offsite vapor extraction wells VW-12
and VW-13 (EMCON, report in preparation).
