Two areas measuring about 5,500 square feet (ftz) and 9,500 ft2 were excavated to
depths of up to 38 feet below ground surface (bgs). The Report describes remediation
activities performed at the Site between November 2009 and January 2010 that included
the excavation, testing, segregation, sampling, disposal and stockpiling of clean and
contaminated soil from two areas identified as former above ground storage tank (AGT)
containment areas onsite along with the soil beneath a former pump island.
Presently, 6,400 cubic yards of soil contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons as
diesel (TPHd), ranging from 34 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) to 17,000 mg/kg, remain
stockpiled onsite and covered with visqueen. Reportedly, clean overburden soil was used
to fill the lower portion of both excavations to address instability issues.
The Stockpile Remediation Work Plan proposes to remediate the diesel-contaminated
stockpiles using a process developed by a bioremediation firm, Renovogen, that utilizes
enhanced populations of select indigenous microbes to perform biodegradation.
MARCOR proposes to till and redistribute the existing stockpile into a 6-foot high layer
spread out over the Site. Boreholes, eight inches in diameter by 4.5 deep, will be drilled
throughout the stockpile in grids that measure 15 feet by 15 feet to facilitate infiltration
for every 50 cubic yards. In the initial stages of treatment, about 22,000 gallons of the
microbe solution will be used to inoculate the stockpile through the infiltration galleries
and through surface applications. Subsequent applications will consist of water every
other day and the microbe solution every week.
California Environmental Protection Agency
d Replied Paper _
