} < I SUMMARY
! + Murray & Associates was retained by Mr. Lambert C. Barnum of San Andreas, California r
to assess spLcific environmental concerns associated with the apparent over spillage of 4
waste oil from a 200-gallon underground storage tank. The storage tank was excavated f i
r
- and removed from the Stan Morri Ford Dealership located at 104 West 11th Street in
tqe6l.
-' Tracy, California in November 1988 (Figure 1). The Ford dealership consists of
approximately .fit acres in Section 21, Township 2 South, Range 5 East, located in the
northern part of San Joaquin County. The property is owned by Mr.l zmbert Barnum and
has been leased to the owners of the Ford Dealership since 1970. Figure 2 is a plot plan
of the facility which shows the location of buildings, perimeter fencing, asphalt or concrete ;
cover, water and sewer lines, and the location of the former underground waste oil tank.
The facility was constructed in 1940 and has functioned as a Ford Dealership for over 45
years. ;
E
Work completed by Murray & Associates for this project identified the presence of
aromatic hydrocarbons and oil and grease in :soil samples and traces of aromatic
in the groundwater sample collected.
hydrocarbons and solvents
Periodic overfilling of the waste oil tank had apparently caused oily liquid waste to filter
downward through the soils to the water table. Once saturated conditions had been i.
reached in the subsurface sails, the contamination began to spread laterally away from the
i
tank. Seasonal fluctuation of the water table in the Tracv area has also caused the waste `k
oil to be smeared vertically about three feet above and two feet below the existing water
level over an area much larger than the original dimensions of the tank.
;j
Soil remediation conducted during this investigation consisted of excavating and removing
approximately 100 cubic yards of contaminated soil. The soil was transported under
manifest to the Amador County landfill, a State of California, Solid Waste Management
Hoard permitted Class II facility for disposal. Essentially all contaminated soil visible in
J.
1.
i
_ 3
r
