A
ME
1r-
1 '.
collection, the ends of the brass tubes were covered with aluminum foil, plastic end-caps,
and sealed with duct tape. Each brass tube was labeled, and placed in an ice chest chilled
! to 4'C for transport to California Water Laboratory in Modesto, California for analysis.
California Water Laboratory is a Department of Health Services certified hazardous waste
laboratory (certificate No. 130). Each of the three soil samples collected from the north,
+z. east and west walls of the excavation were collected from 'visibly" clean material. The soil
t a sample collected from the south wall however, was obtained from the visibly stained area
r approximately 4 feet above the water table. The sample was taken directly from the
excavation using a driven-tube type sampler and a clean 2 x 4-inch brass tube. Following
i
the extraction of the brass tube from the sampler, the tube was prepared for transport to
the laboratory as described above. Formal chain-of-custody records were maintained and
submitted on each sample.
i
t 3.2 Water Sample Collection
fr
A sample of the standing water in the excavation was obtained on January 17, 1990. Prior I
to sample collection, the excavation was purged of all standing water. The purged water,
- f'J ?
approximately 500 gallons, was removed by vacuum truck for off-site disposal at the
Chemical Waste Management Facility at Kettleman Hills. No free product was visible on
L. the surface of the water prior to purging. The water sample was collected utilizing a clean !
;. :••. Teflon point-source bailer. A clean, unused bailer line was used to lower the baiici• into
{ the excavation. The sample was taken from the surface to about 12-inches below the
surface of the water in the excavation. The sample was transferred to a single 40 ml
volatile organic analysis (VOA) vial with only limited agitation, using the sampling port on
the bailer. The VOA vial was labeled and placed in the chilled ice chest for transport to
the analytical laboratory.
i
-- 7
