As contaminated soil was removed from the hole by the rotating action of the auger flyte, soil was smeared against the side wall of the boring. Because of the depth of sample collection, only limited lateral pressure could be used to obtain a `clean" soil sample from the side wall of the borings. As a result, contaminated soil brought to the near surface by the angering process was unavoidably included in each of the auger; samples. The analytical results presented in Table 1 should therefore be considered as maximum values. Since the initial oil and grease concentration found in the side wall of the former excavation was 19,900 mg/kg; it is reasonable to argue that the majority of the t contaminated material has now been removed and that the minor amount of contamination remaining poses a threat to neither the local groundwater nor to public health.
