Advanced
GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
12 December 1997
AGE-NC Project No. 97-0312
Mr. Michael Infurna
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY PHS-EHD
304 East Weber Avenue, Third floor
Stockton, California 95202 ,
Subject: Soil Stockpile Sampling and Backfilling of Excavation
CHEROKEE TRUCK STOP
3535 East Cherokee Road, Stockton, California
Dear Mr. Infurna:
In accordance with the request of our client,Mr. Ellis Cecchini of Cecchini, Cecchini and Giovannoni;
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) collected and analyzed samples from stockpiled soil
located at 3535•East Cherokee Road, Stockton, California. The stockpiled soil was generated during
overexcavation procedures performed after the removal of six underground storage tanks (UST) on
18 September 1997.
Approximately 400 cubic yards of soil are currently stockpiled on the property. On 22 November
1997, the stockpiled soil was spread to a thickness of approximately three feet. The stockpile was
then divided into sections of approximately 25 cubic yards each. One soil sample was collected from
a depth of approximately 1.5 to 2 feet below the surface-near the center of each section. Each sample
was analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel(TPH-g and TPH-d)
and volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes; BTE&X) with
methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). A total of 16 soil samples were collected and analyzed. The
stockpile location, sample locations and grid areas are illustrated on Figure 1.
TPH-g and TPH-d were detected at concentrations as high as 1,500 parts per million(ppm, reported
as milligrams per kilogram) and 4,100 ppm, respectively. Toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes were
detected at concentrations up to 0.54 ppm, 2.4 ppm and 44 ppm, respectively.-Benzene and MTBE
were not detected in the samples analyzed. Analytical results are summarized on Table 1. Procedures
and findings will be summarized in a Quarterly Report to be prepared by AGE.
Ground water was recorded at a depth of 55 feet bsg in March 1997, the highest elevation since
monitoring began in 1990-The floor of the UST excavation is at a depth of approximately 15 feet
before the addition of any backfill material, leaving a distance of 40 feet between the bottom of the
4005 North Wilson Way, Stockton,California 95205
Telephone(209)467-1006 FAX(209)467-1118.
