The
CUF has recommended that the EHD consider the site for closure.
An 8-hour soil vapor extraction (SVE) pilot test was recently conducted, during which an
estimated 40 pounds of total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPHg) was
recovered. Although the site is described as predominantly fine-grained, a radius of influence of
40 feet at 1.1 inches of water vacuum was determined. The favorable results have led the
consultant to recommend SVE to remediate the site. Based on the high contaminant mass on
site and the nearby location of a domestic well, the EHD's to recommendation is to conduct an
extended SVE pilot test for a 14- to 30- day period to determine if the recovery rate can be
sustained. Although the nearby domestic well has not been impacted, the EHD is of the opinion
that remediation of the more easily recovered contaminant mass is the prudent course of action.
If the initial SVE pilot test results were misleading and there are no cost-effective remedial
technologies suitable to address the residual contaminant mass, the EHD will investigate the
potential for a low-risk closure for the site.
