16 August 2001
w
AGE-NC Project No 97-0312 ,
Typically, the microbes utilized in bioremediation of ground water are aerobic and commonly require
'* additional oxygen to supplement dissolved oxygen concentrations in ground water Generally,
'several air sparging or in-well aeration, sources are sufficient to provide the necessary oxygen, t
' however, in some cases the addition of hydrogen beroxide or other oxygen source is necessary
' 8 2 2 Monitoring Activities
r,
After Inoculation, the inoculation wells and ground water monitoring wells should be monitored for
' several months by periodic field measurements of organic vapor, carbon dioxide and oxygen Ground
water samples should be collected and analyzed for petroleum hydrocarbons, bacterial populations
and nutrient availability If monitoring indicates areas of slow remediation, additional Inoculations
' may be required
' 8 2 3 , Feasibility
Results of bioremediation pilot tests at other sites indicate that lighter petroleum hydrocarbons, such
' as gasoline compounds are biodegraded more readily than longer-chain(heavier)hydrocarbons,such
as diesel fuel compounds Feasibility studies have not been performed at the subject site
- ,82-4 Duration-Duration (and cost) of in-situ bioremediation are dependent on the volume of soil and water to be
remediated, the number of inoculation and monitoring wells, the average concentrations of
' contaminants and nutrients, temperature and the permeability of soil Theoretically, the radius of
influence of the inoculation well should increase rapidly at first, then gradually decline as the
affected volume increases and the bacteria encounter decreasing hydrocarbon concentrations toward
' the margins of the hydrocarbon plume Shorter-chain hydrocarbons are typically consumed first and
longer-chain hydrocarbons later The duration for successful' in-situ bioremediation cannot be
,
predicted because many variables are not'
known
A
' 8 2 5 Cost
Bioremediation of ground water can be a very cost-effective method of treatment With little on-site
equipment required beyond the initial inoculation, the start upcosts for in-situ bioremediation at the
' site would be between$40,000 00 and$60,000 00 However;monitoring will vary depending upon
• regulatory requirements, which could significantly increase the total cost of the project
' Advanced GcoEnvironmental,Inc
