David Wang, P.E.
Page 2
0 Contamination resulted from past storage, handling, and
use of these solvents.
o TCE and PCE are moving off-site via groundwater
transport. The direction of movement is to the
northeast4 Monitoring wells have detected low levels of
contamination as far as 2000 feet beyond the Depots'
boundary.
ri
o The hydrogeology and extent of contamination have been
sufficiently defined for RI/FS purposes.
o Soil contamination does not present a significant health
threat. However, remediation of soil contamination at
specific sites would expedite groundwater cleanup.
The draft report concludes that there are 3 major areas (1, 2 ,
and 3) of contamination and 3 areas (4 , 5, and 6) with less
significant contamination.
AREA 1:
Area 1 is located near the northeast corner of DDTC. It is
considered a major source area for both soil and groundwater
contamination. Facilities contributing to the contamination
in Area 1 are a railroad storage and maintenance building, a
vitrified clay pipe line that handles industrial waste, and a
recoup facility.
AREA 2 :
Area 2 is located 1000 feet downgradient of Area 1, at the
Depots' northern boundary. Area 2 served as an open storage
area. WCC theorizes that the majority of contamination
detected in Area 2 had its' origin at a different location,
primarily Area 1. Groundwater monitoring wells have detected
TCE and PCE moving off-site from Area 2 .
AREA 3 :
Area 3 is located along the Depots' northeastern boundary,
1400 feet cross gradient of Area 2 . It is suspected that
shallow groundwater contamination is the result of leakage
from storage and handling. Groundwater contamination moving
off-site has also been detected in Area 3 .
AREA 4 :
Area 4 is located between a warehouse (building 18) and a
flammable storage facility (building 28) . WCC considers the
