The EHD had directed the submittal of a work plan to install an ozone sparging
system to remediate the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in the 'Underground Storage
Tank No. 3 area (the southeast petroleum hydrocarbon contaminant plume) by letter dated 30
May 2013.
In the work plan, AGE proposes:
• Installation of twelve one-inch diameter ozone sparge wells (OS-5 through OS-16),
equipped with 48-inch micro-porous sparge points at depths between approximately 40
and 44 feet below surface grade (bsg), using eight-inch diameter hollow stem augers at
locations illustrated on Figure 2 of the work plan;
• Submittal of a draft Notice of Intent for the injection permit to comply with the terms of
General Waste Discharge Requirements (WDR) Order No. R5-2008-0149, and a draft
Monitoring and Reporting Program to the California Regional Water Quality Control
Board Central Valley Region for their review and comment;
• Collection of soil samples at five-foot intervals during the well installations, beginning at
35 feet bsg, for lithologic evaluation; and based on field screening using an organic
vapor meter with a photo-ionization detector, selection of certain soil samples for
analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g); benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX); methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary-
butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME), di-isopropyl ether (DIPE), tertiary
butyl alcohol (TBA), 1,2-dibromoethane (EDB), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) and lead.
• Generation of approximately 2 to 3 pounds of gaseous ozone daily for injection at
approximately 5 to 20 pounds per square inch of pressure during each injection period
lasting 30 to 60 minutes at each proposed ozone injection well following the installation
of the ozone sparge system;
