PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY z1
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
209/468-3420
PAUL VAN DYKEN JAN 2 6 2001
N & S IRRIGATION
P O BOX 805
RIPON CA 95366
RE: N & S Irrigation SITE CODE: 1474
215 W. Main Street
Ripon, CA
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
(PHS/EHD) has reviewed the file including the "Monitoring Report Third Quarter
2000" dated December 28, 2000, prepared by ATC Associates, Inc. for the above
referenced site.
In March 1990 soil samples were collected at 11 feet below surface grade (bsg)
in the location of previously removed underground storage tanks (UST's).
PHS/EHD staff noted odor and discoloration of the soil in the south end of the
excavation.
Two soil borings were drilled in November 1997. In July 1998 four more soil
borings were drilled. Soil and groundwater samples were collected from these
soil borings. Analytical results of the soil samples document contamination to a
depth of 30 feet bsg.
Three monitoring wells were installed in February 1999. The soil samples
collected at 30.5 feet bsg were analyzed and evidenced contamination. The
boring logs for the monitoring wells show that the "PID" readings at 40 feet bsg
were less than the readings at 30.5 feet and no product odor was noted at the 40
feet interval.
Although the reports state that the groundwater flow is to the northeast towards
monitoring well MW2, the concentrations of contaminants are greatest in MW1.
A survey identifying all wells within 2000 feet of this site has not been submitted
to PHS/EHD. Contact the Department of Water Resources, the City of Ripon
and conduct a physical search of the area to identify all current and past wells
within 2000 feet of the site. Provide PHS/EHD with the addresses of the wells
identified and show their location on a map of the area. Also provide any known
construction details of the wells identified. PHS/EHD recommends that the
survey information of the monitoring wells be reviewed. An explanation for
contaminant concentrations to be highest in MW1 must be provided.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
