. I%W `sP
_ R&B Trucking
Preliminary Site Assessment
Page: 7
5.3 Soil Sampling
Soil samples will be collected at 3 foot intervals to characterize the sediment types and
for laboratory analysis. Up to four soil samples will be analyzed from this boring,
dependent upon stratigraphy and depth. Brass sample tubes will be sealed with
aluminum foil, capped, labeled and immediately refrigerated until project completion.
—
5.4 Sample Screening
_ Because not every soil sample collected will be analyzed,a screening process is used to
select representative samples. The goal of this selective process is to reduce the cost of
the project without compromising the quality. From field observations noting sediment
type (especially grain size and clay content),moisture content, visible evidence of
contamination(i.e.,color change due to reduction of iron or discoloration from
hydrocarbons and other pollutants),and the presence of contamination odor will be used
to select samples for analysis. A representative sample from each lithology will be
analyzed. Also, one sample will be collected and analyzed from 10 feet below the last
observable contamination. This should confirm that the bottom of the contaminated
zone has been reached.
5.5 Disposition of Soil Boring Cuttings
Soil cuttings will be stockpiled on site with the other soil removed during the
excavation.
5.6 Cross Contamination Prevention
All sampling equipment(split spoon sampler,brass tubes,bailer,&pumps)and auger
(drilling rod, drilling bits,&auger) will be thoroughly steam cleaned before being used
and between uses. Plastic gloves will be worn while collected and changed between all
samples.
5.7 Chain of Custody
Chain of Custody(CofC)forms are legal documents used to track the handling of
samples. All dates, times, persons, and their companies are listed from the time the
sample is collected to its ultimate disposal. A CofC form will be filled out for all
samples collected. The CofC is tracked to insure sample integrity.
