attached to the sample container; 1) date and time of collection, 2) sample identification
number, 3) project number, 4) identity of sample collector, and 5) analysis required.
Sample collection information will be entered onto a Chain of Custody (COC) form that
will accompany the samples during their residency at the site and during transport to the
laboratory that will perform the requisite analysis.
Preservation of the sample(s) will be achieved by placing the sample containers into a
pre-cooled container and maintained at a temperature of approximately 4 2C until the
sample(s) are delivered to the laboratory. Preservation of the sample(s) beyond cooling
is not required.
Copies of the COC will be included with the analytical results presented in the report
that will be prepared to document this investigation and remediation.
5.0 Analytical Protocol and Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)
Soil and groundwater samples will be submitted to a laboratory certified by the DTSC
for analysis of the following constituents,
• TPH-d and TPH-mo using United States Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) Modified Method 8015
All water samples will be run both under standard analysis and a second sample after a
silca gel separation to remove polar hydrocarbons (mainly alcohols and organic acids)
from the sample. Since the TPH-d/mo analysis reports the total of all hydrocarbon, this
dual sampling will enable to establish the ratio of non-polar (pure hydrocarbons) to polar
(oxidized hydrocarbons) compounds. This will indicate the degree of remediation that
has occurred from natural and enhanced bioremediation (or to what extent the
introduction of hydrogen peroxide was successful in remediation).
Samples will be analyzed within the required holding times for the specific analyses.
Laboratory QA/QC will be performed in accord with the requirements for the analysis of
TPH-d and TPH-mo as specified in the current USEPA SW-846. Field QA/QC will
consist of the inclusion of a trip blank for evaluation of sample cross-contamination
during transport of the sample(s). The trip blank will be included and analyzed for TPH-
d and TPH-mo.
Copies of the field and laboratory QA/QC will be included with the analytical results in
the report that will be prepared to document this investigation.
CE Project No.99F-4041
Additional Investigation Work Plan 6
