i
MEW
Field screening of the soil samples was conducted according to the following procedure:
L
- The soil sample was covered with aluminum foil, capped at one end and then
emptied of half its contents to provide headspace. After removing half the
sleeve's contents, the opening was covered with aluminum foil to seal the
vapors from escaping.
- The stainless steel sleeves were then placed in the sun to allow the sample to
heat and volatilize contaminants in the soil.
- Once the sample had been allow to heat, the PID probe tip was inserted into the
headspace through the aluminum foil to collect the field measurement.
As indicated in the boring logs presented in Appendix B, a maximum VOC measurement of
4.5 ppm was recorded in boring HP-2.
4.4.3 T.i hological Loggi„ng
Tetra Tech's geologist logged each boring by both continuous inspection of the drill cuttings
and by examination of samples collected at each sample interval. Detailed logs completed for
each boring include a geotechnical description and Unified Soil Classification designation of
soils encountered, blow counts required to collect samples, instrument measurements, and
general comments (such as odor). A description of site geological conditons is presented in
Section 3.0. Copies of all boring logs are presented in Appendix C.
4.5 Hydropunching
Hydropunching was conducted utilizing a HydroPunch 11 groundwater sampling system. The
HydroPunch H is a specifically designed sample tool that provides hydraulic continuity with
the adjacent water table. The sample tool was pushed into the proper zone (approximately 5-
foot submergence for groundwater sampling), then withdrawn to expose an inlet screen. The
top of the screened interval (0.01 or 0.02 inch screen size to minimize turbidity) remained
above the groundwater contact in order to capture potential volatile organic compounds. Once
withdrawn, the interior of the sample tool filled with water. A 1" O.D. teflon bailer was then
lowered through the hollow push rods and body of the HydroPunch II to collect a water
TETRA TECH:Castle Rock Forest Fire Station,Preliminary Site Assessment Report Page I I
