VOW low
gasoline odors. If evidence of residual contamination is observed, SEMCO will be directed
to deepen or extend the excavation as necessary to remove it. However, due to shallow
groundwater and proximity to the convenience store, both the vertical and lateral extent of
excavation are expected to be limited. Because of these limitations, we estimate that the
total volume of soil that must be disposed of will be less than 300 cubic yards.
We anticipate reaching groundwater at a depth of 15 feet, but do not intend to excavate
below the water table. When excavation is terminated, either because the limits of
contamination have been reached or because of obstacles to further excavation, additional
soil samples from the floor, sidewalls, or excavated soil may be collected as directed by
PHS/EHD. All samples will be analyzed for TPH-g and BTEX. Because groundwater is
already known to be contaminated and samples that are collected from monitoring wells are
more reliable than those collected from an open excavation, we do not anticipate collecting
a groundwater sample.
After samples have been collected, the excavation will be backfilled with the segregated soil
and supplemented with enough clean pea gravel to bring the excavation up to grade. A
mechanical compactor will be used to compact the backfill material as needed. The
contaminated soil will be trucked to Forward Landfill for disposal and the site will be
resurfaced with asphalt.
Upgradient will prepare a Tank Removal and Site Remediation Report when all laboratory
work has been completed.
