THIRD QUAR'T'ER REPORT
KWIKEE FOODS
2081 Country Club Boulevard
Stockton,California
September 6,2001
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Groundwater monitoring took place on August 21. The depth to groundwater was measured with a
water level meter and water samples were collected from all seven monitor wells. A battery-
operated purge pump was used to purge the wells of standing water, which was stored in DOT-
approved drums on site. Samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline and
BTEX.
The groundwater flow direction is to the southwest, which is unusual. Flow in this direction has
only been observed on two previous occasions: May 2001 and (possibly) January 1999, as
reported in the July 2001 Problem Assessment Report. The hydraulic gradient appears to be
. steeper along the eastern margin of the site and the flow direction there appears to westward
rather than southwestward, but these are false impressions caused by the rapid drop in the water
table that occurred during the quarter. The static water level in the two shallow piezometers in
the east and northeastern portions of the site area has not fully equilibrated with the piezometric
surface and is slightly high relative to the level in other wells, because the piezometers are
shallow and are screened within the silty aquitard that overlies the sand bed that forms the
principal aquifer at the site.
Water samples from five of the seven wells continue to yield laboratory results that are below the
detection limits for gasoline and BTEX. Several wells have now been free of contaminates for
more than a year. In the other two wells, both TPH-g and benzene-declined significantly since the
last samples were collected in May 2001. The concentrations indicate that groundwater quality is
continuing to improve beneath the site, and provide further confidence that a Site Closure Report
can be prepared during the first quarter of 2002.
1
