FIRST QUARTER REPORT
KWl KEE FOODS
2081 Country Club Boulevard _
Stockton, California
Larch 7, 2001
lEXECUT>1V]E SUMMARY
Groundwater monitoring took place on February 14, 2001. The depth to groundwater was measured
with a water level meter after all seven wells were opened and allowed to stabilize for
approximately 15 minutes. A battery-operated purge pump was used to purge the wells of standing
water, which was stored in DOT-approved drums on site. After purging, seven water samples were
collected in glass vials and, transported to the laboratory, where they were analyzed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons as gasoline; BTEX, and 5 gasoline oxygenates.
Gettler-Ryan Consultants also collected groundwater elevation data on February 14 from wells at
the former gasoline station site across the street from the Kwikee Foods site, and provided this
information to us. We attempted to construct a•groundwater gradient map from the combined
data set, but the resulting map is geologically unreasonable, with highly variable gradients and
flow directions. It appears that errors have been made in locating and surveying the wells or
measuring the water depths. Therefore, the wells will be resurveyed during the second quarter of
2001 and a gradient map will be included in the 2nd Quarter Report.
Hydrocarbon concentrations have now declined below detection limits in all but two wells. TPH-g,
benzene, and MTBE were detected in the two wells near the southwestern corrier of the site (KF-3
and KF-5), and xylene was also detected in KF-3. This confirms, the results from the past two
quarters, which indicated that contamination is limited to ,the southwestern portion of the site and
the area south and gest of the site. We reaffirm our conclusion that contamination beneath Kwikee
Foods represents the leading(northeastern) edge of a contaminant plume that is centered west of the
property -and originated from some other site. Again, we recommend that San Joaquin County
Public Health Services Agency, Environmental Health Division review the data from both Kwikee
Foods and the Chevron site on the west side of Franklin Street to determine whether the latter site is
the source of contamination at the Kwikee Foods property. If so, responsibility for further
investigation at 2081 Country Club Boulevard should be transferred to the owners of the Chevron
site.
. l 1
