FOURTH QUARTER REPORT
KWIKEE FOODS
2081 Country Club Boulevard
Stockton,California
December 15, 1997
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Upgradient Environmental Consultants performed quarterly monitoring activities at the Kwikee
Foods Mart on November 17, 1997. Samples were collected from all three wells and analyzed for
gasoline, BTEX, and gasoline oxygenates by EPA methods 602, 8020,and 8260.
A Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to groundwater in each well. The depth
averaged 12.5 feet below grade. This is the shallowest depth to groundwater that has been measured
since this investigation began in 1990. Using well casing elevation data, a northeastward
groundwater flow direction was determined, with a gradient of approximately 0.00 18 fl/ft.
Each well was pumped to remove standing water before samples were collected, and pH and other
• parameters were measured during purging. These parameters stabilized after approximately 10
gallons had been pumped. The purged water is stored in 55-gallon drams on site.
As in previous monitoring events, elevated concentrations of gasoline and BTEX were measured in
all wells. The gasoline concentration in IAF-3 was higher than at any previous time. Benzene
concentrations range from 1 to 10 times the hazardous limit of 500 pg/l. In addition, the gasoline
oxygenates methyl-tent-butyl-ether (MTBE) and tert-butanol were detected above the currently
acceptable limit of 35 4g/1. Tert-butanol is reportedly used in Chevron gasoline, which could
suggest that gasoline is migrating eastward from the former Chevron station across Franklin Street.
Matrix interference from the high gasoline concentrations prevented the laboratory from obtaining
the required detection limits for most other oxygenates, so it is unknown whether these are also
present.
Upgradient recommends that the UST's be removed or upgraded in the near future to eliminate the
potential for further contamination. We also recommend further drilling and monitoring to
determine the extent of contamination. A work plan for that work has already been submitted and
approved, and drilling is expected to take place early in 1998.
1
