PUBLIC HEALTH SEYVICES
SAN JOAQUIINV COUN -1Y
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Ernest M. Fujimoto, M. D., M.P.H., Acting Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
209/468-3420
MEMORANDUM
TO: Interested Parties
FROM: Mary Meays, Senior REHS
DATE: June 6, 1997
RE: Country Club Shell located at 2575 County Club Blvd., Stockton
History
On December 7, 1994, San Joaquin County, Public Health Services Environmental
Health Division (PHS/EHD) was notified that gasoline was released from underground
storage tanks on site. The tanks in question no longer contained gasoline products.
It was estimated that approximately 8,500 gallons of gasoline was discharged into the
environment. Shell immediately responded with the installation of a monitoring well,
MW 1 and a recovery well, RW 1, on December 10, 1994 and began floating gasoline
product removal. On December 13, 1994, an additional recovery well was installed
and vapor extraction was initiated which continued until May 1, 1995.
On December 18, 1994, four additional monitoring wells, MW2 - MW5, were installed.
Monitoring well, MW4 was installed on St. Bernadette's Catholic Church property.
To expedite site characterization, 14 probes were advanced into groundwater on
December 28, 1994 and groundwater samples collected.
On May 1, 1995, two wells, MW 1 and RW 1, near the leaking tanks were destroyed
prior to the removal of the four underground storage tanks on May 2, 1995. Once the
tanks were removed an excavation occurred that removed approximately 1,044 cubic
yards of contaminated soil. The former product piping was removed and the product
trench lines were overexcavated removing an additional 366 cubic yards of
contaminated soil. On May 11, 1995, two 15,000 gallon underground storage tanks
were installed and the station began operating once the other construction activities
were completed. On May 25, 1995, a replacement recovery well, RW IA was installed.
In January 1997 three additional monitoring wells were installed, MW6 - MW8 and an
exploratory soil boring was drilled and sampled to continue investigating the vertical
extent of the contamination. PHS/EHD directed Shell to,complete the investigation
and to sample nearby domestic wells to verify that the wells have not been impacted
by the gasoline contamination.
Quarterly sampling of the monitoring wells has occurred and will continue until
cleanup is complete.
Future Activities
Shell Oil will place an additional well southwest of the site on Caltrans'property to
further define the extent of groundwater contamination.ation. PHS/EHD has also directed
Shell Oil to define the vertical depth of the contamination so that the full extent of the
contamination is determined. Once the investigation is complete, a corrective action
plan will be prepared and available for public comment. It is anticipated that the
corrective action plan will be available by October 1997.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Mary Meays with PHS/EHD at
(209) 468-0337.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Cate Set es
