Oxygenate Analysis -EPA D. 18 July 1997
result is that we do not know what oxygenate compound is in the gasoline at a particular gas
station. TAME may be used by Chevron, but, because of this swapping,TAME rather than
MTBE will end up in the ground water at a Shell site. And, as an oil company representative
stated, "If MTBE is used at a site, it will be in the ground water, and we don't know how.'
Presumably, this will be true for all additives. Currently, our database records substantiate the
ubiquity of MTBE.
Therefore, in order to determine which oxygenated compound is present, water samples must
be analyzedo EPA Method 8260 and the presence or absence of the oxygenate reported.
