HSI GEOTRANS <br /> SITE SAFETY STANDARD <br /> OPERATING PROCEDURES <br /> To prevent injuries and health effects,the following safe work practices are to be followed <br /> when dealing with known or unknown site hazards. These practices establish a pattern <br /> of general precautions and measures for reducing the risks associated with response <br /> operations. This list is not inclusive and shall be amended as necessary. <br /> 1. Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, taking medications, and smoking <br /> are prohibited in contaminated or potentially contaminated areas, or where <br /> the possibility for the transfer of contamination exists. <br /> 2. Upon leaving contaminated or suspected contaminated areas, hands and <br /> face must be thoroughly washed. A thorough shower and washing must be <br /> taken should excessive body contamination occur. <br /> 3. Avoid contact with potentially contaminated substances. Do not walk <br /> through puddles,pools, mud,etc. Avoid,whenever possible, kneeling on the <br /> ground or leaning or sitting on drums, equipment, or the ground. Do not <br /> place monitoring equipment on potentially contaminated surfaces. <br /> 4. No beard or facial hair may be worn which interferes with a satisfactory <br /> qualitative respir*tor fit test. <br /> 5. Be familiar, knowledgeable, and adhere to all instructions in the Site Health <br /> and Safety Plan. As a minimum, a safety meeting will be held at the start of <br /> each project to discuss this plan. Additional meetings will be held, as <br /> necessary to address new or continuing safety and health concerns. <br /> 6. Be aware of the location of all emergency phone numbers. <br /> 7. All personnel going on-site shall be briefed on the anticipated hazards, <br /> equipment requirements, safety practices, emergency procedures, and <br /> communication methods. <br /> 8. Entrance and exit routes should be planned, and emergency escape routes <br /> delineated. <br /> 9. Unfamiliar operations should be rehearsed prior to implementation. <br /> 10. Whenever respiratory protective equipment is in use,the buddy system must <br /> be used. Buddies should prearrange hand signals or other means of <br /> emergency communication in case of lack of radios or-radio breakdown. <br /> 1 <br />
