3.0 - PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT <br /> ' During excavation in soils containing organic vapors and liquid contaminants, all personnel <br /> shall undertake the following precautions: <br /> ' 3.1 Skin/Clothes Protection <br /> a. Hard hats, steel-toed rubber boots, and suitable gloves will be worn at all times. <br /> ' b. Disposable plastic gloves will be wom for sampling (changed after each sample). <br /> ' 3.2 Respiratory/Eye/Ear Protection <br /> a. During excavation activities, ambient air and soil vapor will be monitored with an <br /> OVA. <br /> ' b. Site perimeter will also be monitored on 30 minute intervals. Monitoring frequency <br /> will be increased by the site manager if conditions approach 10 ppm with the OVA. <br /> ' c. Half face/full face respirators will be worn as warranted (see Section 5). <br /> Nd. Safety glasses/goggles will be worn during all activities. <br /> e. Appropriate hearing protection will be used during all excavation activities. <br /> ' 4.0 - PHYSICAL HAZARDS <br /> Safety hazards will be typical of those associated with construction activities involving heavy <br /> ' equipment (e.g., drill rig). Possible hazards include heat stress, noise, and excavation <br /> activities. <br /> 4.1 Excavation <br /> Erickson personnel will be responsible for performing the excavation and adhering to <br /> standard safety procedures. The exclusion zone for the excavation work area will be a <br /> 20-foot radius around the boundary of the excavation. Only authorized personnel will <br /> ' be permitted within the exclusion zone. No smoking will be permitted within the <br /> exclusion zone. <br /> ' 4.2 Noise <br /> '• Noise may be a hazard in the vicinity of the excavator. Hearing protection will be <br /> worn when working near heavy equipment or loud mechanical equipment. <br />
