4 <br /> • 3 The soils containing elevated levels of petroleum hydrocarbons from the east end of the <br /> former 26,000-gallon tank cavity will be removed using a backhoe or similar piece of <br /> equipment from around the sand tower present at the eastern end of the excavation The sand <br /> tower will be supported or dismantled if the soil removal operation encroaches on the base of <br /> the tower Confirmation samples will be collected from the excavation following removal of <br /> the soils containing elevated levels of petroleum hydrocarbons <br /> 4 The soils containing elevated levels of petroleum hydiocaibons from the north wall of the <br /> former 10,000-gallon tank cavity may be removed using a backhoe of similar piece of <br /> equipment fiorn the surface following backfilling of the excavation if the soils ate of limited <br /> extent If found to extend too close to the rail lines to the north, further exploration using a <br /> hand auger of drilling rig may be required <br /> 22 BENEFICIAL REUSE OF EXCAVATED SOILS <br /> 1 An estimated 1,100 cubic yai ds of soil containing elevated levels of pets oleutn hydi ocai bons <br /> has already been removed of will be removed as part of the tank removal activities The <br /> primary option for dealing with the soil is beneficial reuse as base material for iesurfacing a <br /> • parking lot on Santa Fe property The parking lot will be resurfaced in the next month of <br /> two, and the soil would be blended to the gravel base rock prior to application to the ground <br /> Road oil will then be spread over the surface to create an asphalt-like surface <br /> 2 To evaluate the potential hazardous nature of the soil, a composite sample of the soil will be <br /> analyzed foi selected paiameteis indicated in Title 22 Artide 11 of the Calrfoinia Code of <br /> Regulations Selected analysis will include volatile and semi-volatile oiganics, pesticides, <br /> petroleum hydiocat bons, metals, and an acute aquatic toxicity test The indicated tests <br /> represent the range of compounds potentially present in the tanks <br /> 3 If the composite soil sample is not considered hazardous following completion of the above <br /> tests, use of the soil as base maternal for the resurfacing of the parking lot should be <br /> acceptable If the soil is found to exhibit hazardous characteristics, use of the soil as base <br /> material may still be allowable depending on the nature of the contamurant(s) and permitting <br /> i equrrements <br /> 4 The secondary option for dealing with the soil is onsite biotreatment The soil would be <br /> . placed in lined piles where nutrients will be added to enhance biodegradation of the petroleurn <br /> hydrocatbons The treatment tune is dependant on a number of factors including types of <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS <br />
