! 0
GEOMATRIX
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION
AND SITE STATUS REPORT
Surland Homes Property
Tracy,California
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report presents results of field activities performed by Geomatrix Consultants, Inc.
(Geomatrix), on behalf of Chevron Pipe Line Company(CPL), at the Surland Homes Property
in Tracy, California(the site; Figure 1). Field activities included advancing eight soil borings
and collecting grab groundwater samples from three of the borings. This work was performed
in accordance with CPL'S 9 June 1998 work plan submitted to San Joaquin County Public
Health Services (SJCPHS). The work plan was developed using the approach outlined in the
"Technical Approach to Site Evaluation and Decision Making, Old Valley Pipelines Sites,
Central Valley Region"(Technical Approach), which was approved by the California Regional
IWater Quality Control Board—Central Valley Region(RWQCB) in March 1997 (Geomatrix,
1997). The purpose of this work was to gather data to determine whether groundwater at the
site is affected by petroleum hydrocarbons and if petroleum hydrocarbons present in the site
subsurface are a significant risk to human health. Background information on the site, a
summary of the activities performed and the results obtained, and our conclusions and
recommendations regarding the site are presented below.
I
I2.0 BACKGROUND
CPL's former Old Valley Pipeline(OVP)was located in a right-of-way along the southwest
Iedge of the site. The former OVP transported heavy petroleum(crude and fuel oil) from
Bakersfield to Richmond, California, from the early 1900s to the 1950s.
The Surland Homes Property is located southeast and adjacent to a property known as the
Dividend property(SJC APNs 238-020-10/13/14),which is shown on Figure 1. CPL has
conducted investigations at the Dividend property due to the presence of residual OVP oil in
1
\\sf2\deptdam\Dat Safe\4780\surldrpt.dm 1
